5/13/2023 Detailed Minutiae of Soldier Life in the Army of Northern Vir... by Carlton McCarthyRead NowThe Confederates were a somewhat different breed. The claim that Union General Abner Doubleday invented baseball is sketchy, but there's no doubt his game was the most popular pastime among his boys in blue. Lonely and far from home, Yankee soldiers enjoyed playing baseball. A wonderfully entertaining but obscure book called Detailed Minutiae of Soldier Life in the Army of Northern Virginia by Carlton McCarthy, first published in 1882, recounts that Confederate soldiers enjoyed playing football to relieve the boredom of camp life. ESPN proclaimed 2019 the 150th year of football.īut the real origins of the game may be found earlier, and further south of New Jersey. Such is Google's long reach that they have retroactively awarded the first college football National Co-Championships to both Princeton and Rutgers on the basis that each team won one of the first two games constituting the entirety of that first season in 1869. That first "season" was to consist of three games between those two teams, however the third game was cancelled because professors from both colleges complained about football's disputative effect on academics. Therefore, it is written that the first football game was played in New Jersey between Rutgers and Princeton four years after the end of the Civil War. It is said that history is written by the winners. Mari is out in the dead of the night, aiming to spend the night awake in the middle of the big city. They are staying up at night reading and practicing their instruments, and, when they converse with one another, they do so in their own fashion, sharing stories and keeping their distance with equal frequency. The characters of Tokyo's witching hours are not aware that we are watching them, and they make no attempt to show us the most important parts of their lives. Milk put back on the shelf by one character is purchased by a second, a cell phone left in a store is answered by another, and threats and referrals alter the players in the game and their relationships with one another. In Haruki Murakami's 2004 novel After Dark (English translation 2007), which follows its characters through the night and into the early morning hours, these actions range from the subtly earth shattering to the mundane. In a city teeming with millions, the streets are reduced to a cast of only a few, and their actions spiral out and shape one another. Oh, the connections and events were always there, but now, as the Denny's empties out and our main character goes from one among many to practically alone in the restaurant, those connections are magnified. It's nighttime in Tokyo, and everything affects everything else. By chapter four I had to pause to compose myself because I laid there like. ME: Salty, wet tears of frustration accumulated. THE VIKINGS, THE NINJA TURTLES, AND MY BRAIN CELLS: Rolling in their graves right now. Even all the "buggers", "arseholes" and "shagging" did not make the writing sound even remotely British.Įdit 09.2022: The queen died today y'all and I know it's because she finally read Cruel King. The Queen would finally drop dead if she read this (long live her majesty). THE UNITED KINGDOM: Does not claim this book. That teenage little bitch thought too much of himself. HERO: lil boy needs an ass whooping.an ass flogging if you will. HEROINE: Her body seems to be in a never ending tingling state. I deserved every bit of pain I've felt while reading this book. This is what I get for craving a high school romance. I think it's about time we move past saying "DNF". This book is about a young slave girl named Clara who is taken from her mother and sent to another plantation. Clara got help from people to stitch together a map in the form of a quilt, and she then used the quilt to help people find freedom, which demonstrates that helping others and having hope will help you reach your goals. I liked the big idea of this story, which is to help those around you and to have hope. It was encouraging to ultimately use her developed skill to help people escape slavery. “She wasn’t my for-real blood aunt, but she did her best to care for me.” Although this book is based on historical events, readers may find Clara to be a relatable character, since when she first tried something new (sewing), she was not very good at it, but she continuously got better with practice. Themes of the importance of family and friends were present in the book, such as Clara’s relationship with Aunt Rachel. It has a really good plot, which is about a girl who uses her skills to escape slavery and find freedom in the North. Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt is a historical fiction book about a young girl named Clara who was a slave. |
